A Working-Line GSD Kennel
Vompaco German Shepherds
Vompaco is a working-line German Shepherd kennel based in Victoria, Australia, breeding for sound temperament, strong nerve and genuine working ability. Registered with Dogs Victoria and founded on years of hands-on German Shepherd training through The German Shepherd K9.
Vompaco is a working-line German Shepherd kennel based in Victoria, Australia, founded by Matt Elphick and shaped by a passion for the German Shepherd Dog as it was intended to be — a versatile, capable working dog of sound character, strong nerve and functional construction.
The name Vompaco begins with Paco, Matt's first German Shepherd. Paco started a journey that grew into The German Shepherd K9 Training, years spent understanding and training German Shepherds and high-drive dogs, and an ongoing involvement in dog sport, performance training and the preservation of the breed's working heritage.
That experience forms the foundation of Vompaco.
Our Breeding Philosophy
Our breeding philosophy is centred on preserving the complete German Shepherd Dog. We aim to produce working-line German Shepherds that remain true to breed type and the breed standard, with particular emphasis on strong nerves, self-confidence, balanced character, resilience, environmental stability, health, functional structure, trainability and genuine working ability.
Working Ability Is More Than Drive
A German Shepherd should possess the confidence to engage with its environment, the resilience to remain clear-headed under pressure, the willingness and instinct to work, and the ability to transition from high arousal and purposeful work back into calm, controlled behaviour. Drive should be balanced and channelled by a stable temperament and sound nervous system.
The Role of Dog Sport
Dog sport is an important part of that philosophy, but sport performance alone does not define a breeding dog. Training and competition provide opportunities to develop, observe and assess qualities such as working instinct, trainability, confidence, resilience, endurance, concentration, impulse control and the relationship between dog and handler. Titles and scores can provide evidence of those qualities, but they are not the breeding goal in themselves.
Breeding Decisions Consider the Whole Dog
Breeding decisions must consider the whole dog and the genetics behind it — character, nerve, health, hips and elbows, functional anatomy, pedigree, working traits and the strengths and weaknesses demonstrated across generations.
True to Type
For Vompaco, true to type is therefore much more than conformation alone. It is the combination of physical and mental qualities that allows a German Shepherd to fulfil its purpose: sound in mind and body, strong in nerve, confident without instability, resilient under pressure, functional in construction and willing and capable of work.
Our Aim
Our aim is not simply to breed successful sport dogs. It is to use training, dog sport, health testing, pedigree knowledge and considered selection to help preserve the German Shepherd as a healthy, balanced and capable working dog for generations to come.
It started with Paco. Vompaco carries that purpose forward.
Our Foundation Bitch — Von Ultimate Diva
Von Ultimate Diva is the foundation bitch behind Vompaco. Her pedigree, working traits, health results and progeny are recorded publicly on working-dog.com.
